On 7 May, a memorandum of understanding was signed in Barentsburg between Arcticugol, acting as the logistics operator for BB Research on Svalbard, Murmansk Arctic University and Qingdao University in China.
The agreement forms part of the wider work to develop BB Research’s infrastructure and programme on Svalbard. Its purpose is to establish a long-term international partnership for Arctic research, education and collaboration through the centre.
The memorandum was signed by Ildar Neverov, Director General of Arcticugol; Dmitry Nesterenko, Vice-Rector of Murmansk Arctic University; and Niu Haitao, Vice-President of Qingdao University.
The continued development of BB Research will create new opportunities for long-term research, advanced specialist training and joint scientific and educational projects in the High Arctic. The memorandum marks a further step towards establishing a permanent international research presence on the archipelago and strengthening Russia’s role in Arctic science.
