BB Research:
Beyond Borders
A center for research, dialogue and collaboration — across science, society, culture and the arts, at 78° North
WHY BB RESEARCH
Most institutions approach the North through a single discipline. BB Research exists because the questions here no longer fit inside one — and it treats that crossing as its method.
BB Research is not a traditional Arctic institute. It is an international scientific and educational center in Barentsburg, connecting research, education, field practice, artistic inquiry, diplomacy and culture.
So, what is BB Research?
WHY SVALBARD
Not the edge
of the map
Sovereignty, science, diplomacy, culture and daily life sit unusually close here. That proximity is what BB Research works inside — and works on.
Under the 1920 Svalbard Treaty, the archipelago is a rare international zone — sovereign to Norway, open to shared access, dedicated to peaceful use.
Svalbard is not simply where BB Research sits.
It is part of why it can exist.
Svalbard is not the edge of the map.
It is a center of the network.
THE PHILOSOPHY
The Beyond Borders philosophy operates
on three levels.
WHY NOW
The North is no longer a blank page
One discipline can describe them apart; only together do they hold. That is the work — now, while it is still taking shape.
As the Northern Sea Route opens, climate, governance, heritage, science and culture stop being separate questions.
New shipping routes, shifting power, widening international interest and a fast-changing environment now meet on the same ground.
Moving from isolated academic silos toward open, collaborative field
ecosystems.

WHAT WE EXPLORE
Five fields, one question
05
Art & Creative
Research
How installation and creative practice make acoustic and physical change legible to the senses.
04
Science &
Environment
How remote sensing
and field data can model environmental change and its impact.
03
Cultural
Heritage
How the memory of Svalbard's settlement informs the stories told about it today.
02
Diplomacy
& Governance
How power and treaty obligations shift as global trade routes adapt.
01
Social
Studies
How new maritime infrastructure reshapes local communities and identities in the North.
Five connected angles on the same shifting subject — a North remade by new routes, new interests and a changing climate.
HOW WE WORK
Four ways of working with the Arctic
If the five fields are what we ask, these are how people work with them on the ground.
Public Programs & Knowledge Exchange
Workshops, dialogues and public events connecting the center to its communities.
Artistic & Interdisciplinary Residencies
Time and space for artists and researchers to work with the Arctic as material and question.
Educational Programs & Field Schools
Lecture-and-field formats for students,
run on-site in Barentsburg.
Research Collaborations
Working alongside partner institutions across the social, natural and diplomatic sciences.
RESIDENCY
The program follows artistic practices tied to landscape, memory, sound, visual material, industrial heritage and community, and from August 11, the daily story shifts from how the center was built to what is being made inside it.
When the diary ends, this begins. The first BB Research residency brings together artists and creative practitioners from around the world to work with the Arctic as a place, a material and a question.
First Residency: Arctic is
a mirror of global change
Volume: Vol. 1 · closed
Location: Barentsburg, Svalbard
Dates: August 11–25, 2026
Meet the people behind the first BB Research residency. In the coming weeks, we’ll share their stories, their practices, and the ideas that bring them to Barentsburg.
The Residents
Vol 1 is full — the doors for this season are closed.  Be first to hear about the next call.
The catalogue will grow.
PROJECTS
A platform documenting
its own formation
This is where the work will surface. At launch the archive is small — and that is the point. Over time it gathers field notes, participants, residency outcomes, exhibitions, media and publications into an open record of what the platform produces.

WHERE THE WORK HAPPENS
Where the work actually happens
Pyramiden
Developed by the Soviet Union from the 1930s, Pyramiden preserves a unique layer of Arctic industrial and cultural history. Today, it hosts selected BB Research programs and interdisciplinary projects.
Barentsburg
Founded as a mining settlement in the early 20th century, Barentsburg has been a center of Russian presence on Svalbard for nearly a century. Today, its scientific infrastructure and active local community make it the main base for BB Research.
PARTNERS
Not built
alone
The Arctic brings together different countries, disciplines and ways of seeing the world. BB Research grows through collaboration with our academic, cultural and institutional partners, connecting Arctic research, education and international exchange.
